2005 Dietary Guidelines

Whole Grains at Every Meal
Scientists and health experts agree that every bit of whole grain you eat contributes to your health. But for overall health benefits, try for three or more servings a day. That's why the Whole Grains Council recommends "Whole Grains at Every Meal." Look at your plate at each meal, and make sure you've included some source of whole grains.
How Much is Three Servings?
The USDA defines a whole grain serving as any food containing 16 grams of whole grain. 16 grams is just a little more than half an ounce – so three servings (48 grams) of whole grain total under two ounces. A small amount of whole grain translates into big health benefits!

The Whole Grains Council (www.wholegrainscouncil.org) has created a system for identifying products that are sources of whole grains. The eye-catching black and gold Whole Grain Stamp marks products containing a half serving or a full serving of whole grains, offering consumers a simple way to get the recommended three servings per day of whole grains. Oprah Winfrey has become a supporter of Whole Grains and the Whole Grains Council Stamp system. As Oprah told her viewers recently, “…if you still aren't sure which of your favorite foods are really made with whole grains, look soon for these stamps on products. They're going to help take out the guesswork.”
