Planting:
Amaranth seed requires accurate seed planting
equipment that can be calibrated for uniform ¼”
to 1” depth planting. Optimum depth for
planting is ½”
The types of planters which have worked successfully
include:
• John Deere 71 flexi-planter with #3 vegetable
planter or Model 33 Vegetable planter using celery
seed plates
• White #5400 air planter or other corn
planter with insecticide box for the Amaranth
seed
• Grain drills with holes plugged to plant
in rows or many modern planters with vegetable
planting attachments that meet intended methods
of planting and cultivation
Planting Densities: Evidence
to date indicates general increase in crop advantages
when plant densities are at 500,000 – 860,000
plants/acre using approximately 24 – 36
oz. seed/acre.
The higher planting densities in general tend
to:
• Reduce weed competition for available
nutrients and water
• Aid cultivation
• Reduce side foliage, increasing efficiency
of dry-down and processing through mechanical
harvesters
Row Planting: Spacing
between rows should be correlated to requirements
of the equipment. A general recommendation is
28 – 30” row spacing with 1/2”
to 1.5” seed placement spacing within the
row, when using seed having a tested germination
rate of 85% or higher. |
