Do I need special equipment to raise amaranth?

No. Most growers can use their corn planters for planting and their combines for harvesting, with just minor modifications to be able to distribute and capture the small amaranth seed (1/32 of an inch). We have seen these modifications be as simple as duct tape but typically it requires a small screen to ensure the seed is distributed/captured properly.

When should I plant amaranth?

You should plant amaranth after your corn and beans. Amaranth can be planted as late as the middle of June.

When should I harvest amaranth?

Just the opposite of planting, you should harvest amaranth before your beans and corn. It should be harvested within days after the first killing frost. If you wait too long after this first frost, you run the risk of the plant becoming fragile and the seeds dropping out of the head of the plant. If you don't have a killing frost in your area, the optimal total growth period is 130 days.

How do I get planting seed?

Nu-World Amaranth supplies growers with planting seed, which is free if you are part of the Grower Advantage Program. You typically will use about 1.5 pounds of planting seed per acre.
