Cultivation Practices:
Grain amaranth requires 3 – 5 days for germination
and grows very slowly during the first 2 –
3 weeks. When seedlings reach about 18”
in height, growth of stem and foliage increases
rapidly thus requiring less cultivation for weed
control.
During early cultivation, hilling guards are
recommended to prevent covering of the very young
plants. Three cultivations are recommended during
the first five weeks. This cultivation rate may
have to be increased or decreased depending on
rain or irrigation resulting in weed crop stimulation.
Once the amaranth reaches 16 – 24”
in height, the foliage canopy closes out competition
from weeds. Total growth period required is approximately
130 days.
Moisture Requirements:
Amaranth requires some moisture for germination
and during its early stages of growth. After it
sprouts, the need for water is not as critical
since it has exhibited drought resistant characteristics. |
